How to root Samsung Galaxy S i9000


Globally, Android holds 49.2% market share compared to 18.9% held by iOS. It is estimated that, Android will grab global market share of 48.8% by 2015, compared to 17.2% held by iOS. The OS is used by a number of OEM’s (Original equipment manufacturers). Even though Android is open source OS, it is shipped in locked version where the buyer only gets “guest access”, which limits the user’s control over the device. For example, the owner is powerless to remove pre installed apps. Rooting gives super user access to the owner, allowing complete control of the device by the user. 

Samsung is the leading player in the global mobile market. In the smart phone sector the company is the number one player competing with iPhone, BlackBerry and other Android players in the market. Samsung also sells smart phones based on its proprietary OS named Bada.

Today we will discuss how to root Samsung Galaxy S i9000. The Samsung Galaxy S is an Android smart phone that was launched in March 2010. The device features a 1 GHZ ARM Hummingbird processor, internal Flash memory of 8 to 16 GB and a 4-inch, 480×800 pixel Super AMOLED capacitive touch screen.  Other features include Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5 MP camera with a maximum resolution of 2560x1920 and a front-facing 0.3 MP VGA camera. The phone features a PowerVR graphics processor, which yields 20 million triangles per second, making it one of the fastest graphics processing unit in the smart phone category.

Before we start, DISCLAIMER: Rooting may void the device’s warranty and the below mentioned method may be a bit risky and we are not responsible if the device is damaged or you lose data, therefore it is advisable to please proceed at your own risk.

Make sure that the battery is fully charged, because if the battery drains totally during the rooting process, bricking may happen. Also make sure to create a backup of the device data such as SMS, internet settings, contacts and other media files in order to get data back in case of problems.

Step 1: Download Samsung Kies and install it. Samsung Kies is a software application which is used to communicate between Samsung devices. The software can be downloaded from the Samsung Global Download Center or the individual phone support pages.

Step 2: Download the Rooting Package to your computer and extract the same.

Step 3: After extraction, open the Odin on your computer and turn off your phone so that the device can be entered in the download mode.

Step 4: activate download mode for the phone by simultaneously pressing Volume Down Key + OK button, and also holding the Power Button.

Step 5: Once the device enters into download mode, connect the phone to the Odin after which you will see that the ID: COM section in odin will turn Yellow which will mean that all the drivers are installed successfully and you are ready to proceed to the next step.

Step 6: Now, click on “PDA” to select “zImage” and click on “Start” to start the process of rooting. The device gets rebooted once the process is completed.

Step 7: Once the device gets rebooted, you need to remove the connected USB cable and then close the Odin in your PC.

Step 8: Enable "USB Debugging". Path for USB debugging is Menu>Settings>Applications>Development.

Step 9: Also enable "Unknown Sources" from the following path: Menu>Settings>Applications

Step 10: Connect USB cable to the mobile and then connect to PC. Now open the file called “RUNME” from the extracted files. The terminal window will automatically disappear once the process is completed.

Step 11: After the window disappears, copy the Superuser.apk file to your phone and install the same by opening it in your phone.

Step 12: After this you need to turn off your phone and enter in the recovery mode. To enter the recovery mode please press Volume UP Key + OK button, and simultaneously pressing the Power Button. Within the recovery mode, please select the Wipe data/factory reset and also you need to select Wipe Cache partition and then reboot your device by selecting reboot system now with the help of Volume rocker keys.

Step 13: Now download and install the “ROM Manager” tool from Google Play store to your phone. Once it’s installed, you need to open the app and select “Flash Clock Work Mod Recovery” option to install the recovery.

After completion of the above step you will have a successfully rooted Samsung Galaxy S i9000 phone.
