How to root AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket

Google’s Android OS leads the US Smart phone market with 48.5% market share compared to 29.5% held by Apple’s iOS. Globally, Android holds 49.2% market share compared to 18.9% held by iOS. It is estimated that, Android OS will capture a global market share of 48.8% by 2015, compared to 17.2% held by iOS.

The OS is used by a number of OEM’s (Original equipment manufacturers). Even though Android is open source OS, it is shipped in locked version where the buyer only gets “guest access”, which limits the user’s control over the device. For example, the owner is powerless to remove pre installed apps. Rooting gives super user access to the owner, allowing complete control of the device by the user.

Samsung is the leading player in the global mobile market. In the smart phone sector the company is the number one player competing with iPhone, BlackBerry and other Android players in the market. Samsung also sells smart phones based on its proprietary OS named Bada.

Today we will discuss how to root AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket, which is basically a Samsung manufactured Android mobile. Before we start, DISCLAIMER: Rooting may void the device’s warranty and the below mentioned method may be a bit risky and we are not responsible if the device is damaged or you lose data, therefore it is advisable to please proceed at your own risk.

Make sure that the battery is fully charged, because if the battery drains totally during the rooting process, bricking may happen. Also make sure to create a backup of the device data such as SMS, internet settings, contacts and other media files in order to get data back in case of problems.

Step 1: Download Samsung Kies and install it. Samsung Kies is a software application which is used to communicate between Samsung devices. The software can downloaded from the Samsung Global Download Center or the individual phone support pages.

Step 2: Enable "USB Debugging". Path for USB debugging is Menu>Settings>Applications>Development.

Step 3: Also enable "Unknown Sources" from the following path: Menu>Settings>Applications

Step 4: Connect USB cable to the mobile and then connect to PC

Step 5: Download Odin, ClockworkMod recovery package  and Superuser 3.0.7 to the PC.

Step 6: Copy the Superuser file on the mobile’s sdcard, and keep the other two files on PC.

Step 7: Extract the content of the Odin zip file and open the .exe file.

Step 8: Now turn off the device and connect your device with your PC. Simultaneously press and hold the Volume Up + Volume Down buttons (I mean both buttons). Leave the buttons when you see the download mode screen.

Step 9: Now ODIN will automatically detect your device. If it doesn’t, either try Step 8 again or download the latest browsers for your device.

Step 10: Once Odin detects your device just click on PDA and select SkyrocketCWMrecovery.tar that you’ve already downloaded in step five.

Step 11: Now click start and clockworkMod Recovery will be flashed on your device. The device will automatically reboot after ODIN is done.

Step 12: After ODIN reboot, turn off the device again and reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery by pressing and holding Volume Up + Volume Down + Power (all three buttons). Release the buttons only when you see the main menu.

Step 13: Now navigate to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard and select SuperUser 3.0.7 file that you have downloaded and transferred to your device in Step five.

Step 14: Once SuperUser has been flashed, select reboot system now. That’s it your device is now rooted with “super-user” access.
