How to root Samsung Epic 4g


Samsung is the leading player in the global mobile market. In the smart phone sector the company is the number one player competing with iPhone, BlackBerry and other Android players in the market. Samsung also sells smart phones based on its proprietary OS named Bada.

Today we will discuss how to root Samsung Epic 4g, which was launched in June 2010. It is also available as Samsung Galaxy S Pro For Sprint. The device runs on Android OS, v2.1 (Eclair), which is upgradable to v2.2. The major specifications of the phone include:

Network supported: 2G Network, CDMA 800 / 1900, 3G Network, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and HSDPA 2100.

Dimensions: 124 x 65 x 14 mm
Weight:             155 g
Keyboard: QWERTY with Touch-sensitive controls. It also supports Multitouch   
Display             Type:    Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors
Size:     480 x 800 pixels, 4.0 inches (~233 ppi pixel density)
Memory: 512 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM and external memory card slot (microSD) which supports up to 32GB

Before we start, DISCLAIMER: Rooting may void the device’s warranty and the below mentioned method may be a bit risky and we are not responsible if the device is damaged or you lose data, therefore it is advisable to please proceed at your own risk.

Make sure that the battery is fully charged, because if the battery drains totally during the rooting process, bricking may happen. Also make sure to create a backup of the device data such as SMS, internet settings, contacts and other media files in order to get data back in case of problems.

Step 1: download the following files:

       1.     Odin
       2.     ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.7 Recovery TAR file for Odin. Copy the below code and paste in the address bar and press enter to get the file (drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTools/cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5)
       3.     ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.7 Recovery ZIP file. Copy the below code and paste in the address bar and press enter to get the file (drockstar.devphone.org/EpicTools/cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.zip) for upgrading from existing CWM (It will upgrade the existing CWM to 5.0.2.7)
       4.     kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 (See the bottom of the post for kernel to be downloaded)
       5.     su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip. Copy the below code and paste in the address bar and press enter to get the file (downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip) (Save this on the mobile’s sdcard)

Step 2: Enable "USB Debugging". Path for USB debugging is Menu>Settings>Applications>Development.

Step 3: Also enable "Unknown Sources" from the following path: Menu>Settings>Applications


Step 3:
·         Open Odin 1.85
·         Select only Auto Reboot in the screen.
·         Go to the PDA box on the right side. Click the PDA button and go to the kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 file and select it. Check the PDA box (check box)
·         Switch off the Epic 4g, once it is completely off open the physical keyboard and press and hold the "1" key and continue to hold while pressing POWER button. This will boot your phone into Download Mode, i.e. Black screen with yellow graphics/print of Android guy shoveling.

Step 4: Now connect USB cable to the phone and connect it to your computer. You will see a yellow box light up on the upper left hand side of Odin that says COM:XXX.

Step 5: Make sure to check only Auto Reboot in Odin, and the kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 file in the PDA SLOT.

Step 6: Press START. This will flash a custom kernel to your device. The device will automatically reboot when finished.

Step 7: Now switch off your device, and boot into Download Mode similar to what we did in Step 3.

Step 9: Open Odin and make sure only Auto Reboot is checked/selected.

Step 10: Go to the PDA box on the right side. Click the PDA button and select the cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5 file and check PDA box next to it.

Step 11: Connect your device once again via USB cable and verify that you are connected to Odin by looking for the YELLOW COM box lite up.

Step 12: Press start. This will place CWM (ClockWorkMod) recovery on your device in place of the stock recovery.

Step 13: Switch off your device.

Step 14: Press and hold Volume Down+Camera+Power buttons all together until you boot into CWM recovery.

Step 15: You can navigate CWM recovery with your Volume Up/Down buttons and make selections with the camera button.

Step 16: Scroll down to Install Zip from SDCARD and select

Step 17: Navigate on your sdcard to the su-3.0.-efgh-signed.zip and press select. Select YES again to install the file.

Step 18: When complete hit your BACK button on the bottom of your phone this will take you back to the main CWM menu

Step 19: Press auto reboot. This will reboot your device into a rooted device. You can verify rooting by going to your app list, if you see the super-user icon/app, your device is rooted.
