How to root The HTC Magic


Today we will discuss how to root The HTC Magic, which is also known as HTC MyTouch 3G in the US and NTT docomo HT-03A in Japan. This is the second device launched by HTC Corporation to run on Android OS, after HTC Dream. The device was launched by a number of carriers across globe in the first half of 2009.

The phone runs on Android v1.5 also known as the Cupcake and has a Qualcomm MSM7201A chipset with a 528 MHz ARM 11 CPU. The smart phone has a standard Li-Ion 1340 mAh battery which has a stand-by time of up to 600 hours and talk time of up to 6 hours. The device has a RAM of 192MB and ROM of 512MB. It also includes a microSD slot which supports up to 32GB. The device is shipped with a free 4GB data card. It has a 3.15 mega pixel rear camera with autofocus and video calling facility. It supports HSDPA of speeds up to 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA of up to 2 Mbps.

Before we start rooting, DISCLAIMER: Rooting may void the device’s warranty and the below mentioned method may be a bit risky and we are not responsible if the device is damaged or you lose data, therefore it is advisable to please proceed at your own risk.

Make sure that the battery is fully charged, because if the battery drains totally during the rooting process, bricking may happen. Also make sure to create a backup of the device data such as SMS, internet settings, contacts and other media files in order to get data back in case of problems.

The rooting of HTC Magic is a lengthy one. Make sure to religiously follow the flow of commands to get rooted device.

Step 1: First of all we need to downgrade the device to Android 1.5, for the root method to work. To this follow these steps:

·         Download the following file from the here.
·         After download place the file named SAPPIMG to the root of the SD Card
·         Now enter HBOOT mode by first switching the mobile off and then switching it on by pressing and holding the power and volume up keys.
·         After achieving Hboot status press the trackball and wait till the SAPPIMG file is detected.
·         After detection press the trackball to confirm its installation. This will flash the update.
·         After flashing the update, reboot the phone.

Step 2: We should find out the version of the motherboard.

·         Boot again into Hboot mode using the above technique
·         Watch the top line and take a reading of the top line (It should be either ‘32A’ or ‘32B’)
·         After noting the motherboard version reboot the smart phone.

Step 3: We now flash a custom recovery image.

·         Firstly go to the phone’s browser and paste the URL in red (http://kan.gd/stt)
·         Now install FlashRec after downloading it.
·         Open the app and in the box please type http://kan.gd/sty if your mother board is 32B, and http://kan.gd/su0 if your motherboard is 32A.
·         Now tap the ‘Download Recovery’ option and simply wait for it to complete.

Step 3: Now we have to flash a Custom ROM!

·         Firstly download a Custom ROM from the link here.
·         Copy the file to the root of the SD card and rename it to ‘update’.
·         Now reboot the device into recovery mode by first switching the phone off and turning it back on by holding the power and home buttons.
·         Use the trackball to navigate to the ‘Nandroid Backup’ option and select it.
·         In the next window select ‘Wipe data/factory reset’
·         Subsequently, select Apply /sdcard/update.zip in the recovery mode and wait for it to finish.

Once the process is over select the Reboot system now option. That’s it you will have a rooted HTC MyTouch 3G smart phone.
