The
HTC Evo 4G also known as the HTC EVO WiMAX ISW11HT in Japan is a HTC Corp
manufactured smart phone and marketed by Sprint as its flagship Android smart
phone. The device runs on Verizon’s WiMAX network.
Today
we will discuss how to root HTC EVO 4G. Sprint is rumored to launch the LTE version
of EVO 4G in May 2012.
Before
we start, DISCLAIMER: Rooting may void the device’s warranty and the below
mentioned method may be a bit risky and we are not responsible if the device
is damaged or you lose data, therefore it is advisable to please proceed at
your own risk.
Make
sure that the battery is fully charged, because if the battery drains totally
during the rooting process, bricking may happen. Also make sure to create a backup
of the device data such as SMS, internet settings, contacts and other media
files in order to get data back in case of problems.
Step1:
First download and extract the HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread rooting files from the
link here.
Step
2: Uninstall the HTC Sync from the PC and install the other drivers provided within
the Zip file, extracted earlier. Run
the HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe file to load the drivers.
Step
3: After installing the new drivers, connect the HTC EVO 4G and the Windows PC
using a USB data cable. Please make sure to select the “Charge only” option.
Step
4: Also enable USB Debugging mode on the handset by using the following path:
Settings>Applications>Development screen and checking “USB Debugging.”
Step
5: Now open the command prompt and navigate to the directory where the files
were extracted by using the command: cd Desktop\rootevo4ggingerbread and
pressing enter key.
Step
6: Make a note of the device’s serial number by either seeing the battery
socket of the device or using the adb command in the command prompt.
Step
7: After taking the serial number, generate the Beta key for Revolutionary:
S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4 on their website. This can be done by using
the executable file, which is part of the previously extracted files. Please
make a note of the beta key generated by the site.
Step
8: Now open the command prompt on the PC and run revolutionary.exe. The program
will ask for the beta key, simply copy and paste the beta key in the space provided
and press Enter to start the rooting process.
Step
9: After the program is over, it will ask if you want to download
ClockworkMod Recovery. Simply say no by typing “N” and pressing the Enter command.
Step
10: Now change the USB connection to “Disk drive”. From the PC, open the handset’s
SD card folder and Copy PC36IMG.zip to the root folder on the handset’s SD
card.
Step
11: Unplug the device and turn it off.
Step
12: Now boot the HTC EVO 4G into Hboot by pressing the handset’s Power and
Volume Down button simultaneously. You will see a prompt asking if you want
to start update. Now press the Volume Up button to select “Yes” and wait for
the update to finish. Once the process is over, you will be asked to reboot
the handset please select “No”
Step
13: In the handset, scroll down to the “Recovery” option by using the Volume
buttons and press Power key to select it.
Step
14: After the device comes in recovery mode, highlight the “USB-MS toggle” in
the menu and enter the Power button to select it. Now plug the device back
into the computer.
Step
15: Use Windows Explorer in the PC and copy the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip file
from “rootevo4ggingerbread” folder to the root folder on the handset’s SD
card.
Step
16: Press the Power button to disable the USB-MS toggle and go back to the
recovery mode menu.
Step
17: There please select the “Flash ZIP from SD card” option on the main menu.
In the sub menu, select the “Choose ZIP from SD card” option. In the next
window highlight su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip using the volume window and press
the power switch to select it.
Step
18: Now reboot the system by going back to the previous menu.
That’s
it you should now see the super-user icon in your device’s app drawer. Your HTC EVO
4G device is now rooted.
